Refersion Alternatives for Small Shopify Stores (2026): 5 Cheaper Options Compared
Refersion's Professional plan starts at $249/month plus a 1.5% transaction fee on every affiliate-driven sale. For most Shopify stores under $200k/month in affiliate revenue, that math doesn't work. Here are five honest alternatives — what each is actually good at, and where each falls short.
If you're searching for Refersion alternatives, the question isn't really "what's cheaper" — almost everything is cheaper. The question is what you're actually giving up if you switch, and whether your store has outgrown Refersion's pricing model or never fit it in the first place.
This guide walks through five alternatives that are genuinely Shopify-native, names what each one is best for, and is honest about the trade-offs. We make one of them (AffRef), which we'll call out clearly when we get there. The other four are real competitors we're not affiliated with.
Why people leave Refersion
Three reasons keep coming up in switching threads on Reddit, IndieHackers, and the Shopify community forum:
- The transaction fee compounds. 1.5% sounds small until you do the maths. A store doing $50k/month in affiliate revenue pays $750/month in transaction fees on top of the $249 subscription — $12k/year just in the percentage. We ran the full four-tier comparison here.
- The plan tiers feel built for enterprise. Anything below "Professional Plus" cuts features like custom reporting or API access. If you're a $5k–$50k/month store, you're either paying for enterprise features you don't need or feature-gated on a starter plan.
- The interface feels dated. Refersion was built in 2013 and it shows. Newer alternatives have cleaner dashboards, faster setup, and better affiliate portals.
The Refersion marketplace sounds like a recruiting shortcut, but in practice it aggregates your affiliate list into a network where the same affiliates can see and apply to competitor offers — including your direct competitors. Most independent Shopify stores get more value from a flat-rate platform that keeps their affiliate list (and customer data) exclusive to them.

Below, each one in more detail — what it's actually good at, and the catches you should know before you switch.
1. AffRef (flat rate, no transaction fees, your list stays yours)
Disclosure up front: this is the tool we make. $49–$249/month depending on store count and features, no transaction fee on attributed revenue, first-party tracking that survives Safari ITP, branded affiliate portals on a subdomain of your choosing, Shopify-native OAuth + webhooks via a one-click app install.
Built for every stage. A brand-new merchant gets the same tracking engine, portal, and reporting as a $500k/month store — no feature-gating, no upsell wall. Tracking quality matters more in the early months, not less; early conversions are how you find out which channels actually work.
No marketplace, on purpose. The affiliates you recruit (your customers, niche creators, newsletter operators) belong to you. We don't aggregate them into a network where they can see and apply to competing offers. That's the structural difference vs Refersion — and it's a feature, not a gap.
Honest caveats: we're younger than Refersion, so we don't have a decade of accumulated fraud-pattern data. If you're at a scale where organized cross-merchant fraud is hitting you, the older platforms have more historical signal.
2. GoAffPro (cheap entry, older tracking stack)
Long-running Shopify affiliate app with a free tier and paid tiers from $29/month. The free tier covers the basics, the paid tier adds custom domains, MLM tiers, and fraud rules.
Catches: the free tier shows "Powered by GoAffPro" in the affiliate portal. Premium pricing climbs once you need more advanced features. Attribution leans on Shopify cart attributes, which has known weaknesses on multi-day buying cycles where Safari ITP wipes the session.
3. UpPromote (influencer-friendly)
Shopify-native, leaning toward influencer programs over traditional affiliate marketing. Has decent tools for managing creator outreach and product seeding.
Catches: free tier has branding, premium tiers ramp up. Dashboard performance reportedly degrades with thousands of affiliates.
4. Shopify Collabs (Shopify's own)
Built into Shopify Admin so there's nothing to install. Optional access to the Collabs Network where creators can find and apply to your brand.
Catches: commission rules are basic (flat % per affiliate, limited tiering). Reporting is shallow. No custom-branded affiliate portal — affiliates see Shopify's UI, not yours. The Network is another marketplace, with the same data-aggregation trade-offs as Refersion at a smaller scale.
5. Tapfiliate (multi-platform, mid-market)
General-purpose affiliate platform supporting Shopify plus Stripe, Recurly, Chargebee, and custom integrations. $89–$449+/month; higher tiers drop the transaction fee.
Catches: not Shopify-first — feature parity with Shopify-native tools needs the higher tiers. Mid-tier pricing climbs into Refersion territory once you add seats and integrations. AffRef covers Shopify + Stripe + custom in one place at flat rate, if multi-platform is the driver.
How to switch without losing data
If you're moving off Refersion, the migration is usually straightforward:
- Export your affiliates. Refersion lets you export a CSV of all your affiliates with their codes, emails, and commission rates. Most alternatives import that CSV directly.
- Set up the new platform in parallel. Install the new tracking script alongside Refersion's. Both can run simultaneously while you verify attribution lines up.
- Run a one-week shadow period. Compare conversions reported by both platforms. They won't match exactly (mostly because of the first-party vs third-party difference — the new one often catches more), but the deltas should be explainable.
- Notify your affiliates. Send a one-paragraph email: "we're moving to a new platform on [date]. Your code and commission rate stay the same. Here's your new portal login." Don't make a big deal of it.
- Cut over. Remove the old script, redirect the old webhook to the new endpoint, cancel the old subscription.
Total migration time for most stores: a week. The hardest part is usually the email to your affiliates — software-wise it's a config change.
