Lemon Squeezy Affiliate Program Setup Guide (2026)
Lemon Squeezy is a great Merchant of Record for SaaS and digital products. It is not a great affiliate platform. Here is how to bolt a real affiliate program onto your LS store in about 15 minutes — links, coupon codes, automatic conversion tracking, and payouts.
Most posts on this topic are thin marketing for one specific tool. This one walks through the actual integration, points out the gotchas, and is honest about what Lemon Squeezy's native affiliate tool can and cannot do. The setup uses AffRef because that is what I work on, but the underlying concepts apply to any third-party affiliate tracker you bolt onto LS.
Why Lemon Squeezy alone isn't enough
Lemon Squeezy does ship a built-in affiliate feature. It is sufficient if your needs are narrow: you want one or two friends with a referral link, you don't mind paying out manually, and you don't need branded affiliate sign-up pages, fraud filters, multi-currency, mobile attribution, or anything else.
For an actual affiliate program — the kind with real influencers and content creators and podcast hosts — the gaps are real:
- No branded portal. Affiliates can't sign up on your domain. Every recruit-and-onboard is manual.
- No coupon-code attribution. Influencer audiences won't click links from a podcast — they will type
SARAH10at checkout. LS can't link a coupon back to an affiliate. - No payout automation. You manually mark each affiliate as paid. There is no bulk PayPal Mass Pay CSV, no Wise batch payments, no Stripe Connect auto-pay.
- No first-party tracking. Cross-platform attribution leaks against Safari ITP.
- No multi-brand. If you run a portfolio of LS products, each one is its own world.
If any of those matter — you skip the built-in and use a real affiliate tracker. Below is how.
What you'll have at the end
- A branded affiliate portal at
yourbrand.affref.comwhere affiliates self-serve. - Each affiliate gets both a referral link AND a coupon code.
- Every LS order via either path auto-creates an attributed conversion.
- Bulk payouts via PayPal, Wise, or Stripe Connect.
- Refund-window protection so you don't pay commission on cancelled orders.
Step 1: Decide your commission structure
For SaaS and digital products on LS, the typical rates are:
- 20-30% recurring for the first 12 months — the common SaaS-affiliate norm. Affiliates love recurring revenue.
- 30-50% one-time on first sale for one-off digital products (ebooks, courses, templates).
- Skip recurring after the first payment if you don't want commissions piling up every month. AffRef's LS integration defaults to this — one conversion per subscription, on the initial purchase.
Don't anchor on Refersion's 1.5% transaction fee or Tapfiliate's percentage caps. With a flat-fee tracker the math is just: customer LTV × commission rate × number of affiliate sales.
Step 2: Create your AffRef brand
Sign up at affref.com, pick "I have my own SaaS / app" on the brand creation step (not Shopify — Lemon Squeezy goes under custom). Set your default commission rate from step 1.
You'll get a brand slug like mybrand. Note it — you'll need it in step 3.
Step 3: Wire the Lemon Squeezy webhook
In your AffRef dashboard: Integrations → Lemon Squeezy → Set up. You'll see two things:
- A webhook URL shaped like
https://app.affref.com/webhook/lemonsqueezy/mybrand. Copy it. - A signing-secret field. Generate any random string (32+ chars, e.g. from
openssl rand -hex 32) and paste it.
Then in Lemon Squeezy: Settings → Webhooks → New Webhook.
- Paste the AffRef webhook URL.
- Paste the same signing secret.
- Subscribe to
order_createdonly. (Notsubscription_created— that double-fires for subscription products.)
Save. AffRef will start receiving LS order events instantly. If you have an existing test order in LS you can use "Send test webhook" to verify the wiring.
Step 4: Pass the affiliate code on checkout
For LS to know which affiliate gets credit for an order, you have to pass the affiliate code at checkout time. LS supports a checkout[custom][affiliate_code] query parameter that flows through to the order's custom_data field — which AffRef reads from the webhook.
If your marketing site (where affiliate clicks land before checkout) has the AffRef tracking script installed, this happens automatically. The tracker reads the affref cookie set by the affiliate's link and appends it to any LS checkout button on the page.
If you're sending traffic directly to an LS checkout URL (e.g. from a podcast description), the affiliate's code goes into the URL itself:
https://store.lemonsqueezy.com/checkout/buy/PRODUCT_ID?checkout[custom][affiliate_code]=SARAH
Step 5: Coupon code tracking (optional, recommended)
Influencer affiliates do not link-share well. Their audience hears about your product on a podcast, in a YouTube video, in an Instagram story. They go to your site directly. The URL referrer is gone.
Coupon codes fix this. The affiliate says "use code SARAH for 10% off" on camera; the customer types it at checkout; AffRef matches the discount code back to the affiliate and creates the conversion regardless of how they arrived at your site.
To enable: in AffRef → Affiliates → edit the affiliate → set their Coupon Code field. Then go into Lemon Squeezy → Discounts → New discount → create the same code with whatever discount you want to offer (10%, $5 off, whatever). AffRef matches on the code string; LS handles the actual discount.
One nuance: LS coupon codes are case-sensitive in matching but AffRef's matching is case-insensitive, so you can mostly ignore the case.
Step 6: Recruit affiliates
Your affiliate signup URL is yourbrand.affref.com. You can customize the page (logo, color, program description, custom signup questions) in Brand settings.
Two recruitment patterns work for LS-based SaaS:
- Power users first. Email your existing top 20 customers offering them affiliate status. They convert at 5-10x the rate of cold influencers.
- Twitter / IndieHackers cold outreach. Find people who tweet about competitors and DM them the affiliate page. 1-3% conversion on cold DMs is reasonable.
Skip influencer marketplaces (Aspire, Grin, etc.) until you have signal. They are expensive and they optimize for the platform, not your conversion rate.
Step 7: Approve and pay out
When affiliates start driving sales, AffRef logs conversions as pending by default — so you can review for refunds before paying. Once they clear the refund window (default 30 days, configurable per brand or per affiliate), you can bulk approve and export.
Payout options:
- PayPal Mass Pay CSV — most common. Download CSV from AffRef → upload to PayPal → Payouts.
- Wise Batch Payments CSV — best for international affiliates. Wise's real-rate FX beats PayPal.
- Stripe Connect auto-pay — wire your Stripe account once, AffRef triggers direct transfers when you click pay. Affiliates onboard with Stripe Express (KYC handled by Stripe).
AffRef never holds your money. Funds always flow merchant → affiliate directly. Why this matters at scale.
Common gotchas
Renewals. LS subscriptions fire subscription_payment_success every month. AffRef intentionally ignores these — one commission per subscription, on the first payment. If you want recurring commissions, talk to support; it's possible but not the default.
Refunds. LS fires order_refunded when a customer asks for their money back. AffRef reverses the corresponding conversion automatically — but only if it hasn't been paid out yet. After payout, you have to claw it back from the affiliate manually. Set a sensible hold period to avoid this.
Test mode. LS test webhooks fire from a separate environment. Make sure you wire test webhooks to a staging AffRef brand (or just disable the AffRef webhook while testing).
Custom data field. If you already use LS's custom_data field for something else, the affiliate_code key won't collide — it's its own subkey. You can verify in any LS order's raw JSON.
Cost comparison
There aren't many LS-compatible affiliate trackers. The realistic options are:
- LS native affiliates — free but feature-light, no automation, no branded portal.
- Rewardful — $49+/mo, Stripe-native, works with LS via Stripe webhooks. Compared in detail here.
- Tapfiliate — $89+/mo, multi-platform, no native LS integration (uses generic API).
- AffRef — $49+/mo, native LS webhook, no transaction fees, branded portal on every plan.
For most LS sellers, the choice is between LS native (free, limited) and a paid tracker. Pick paid if you plan to recruit more than 5-10 affiliates or want any kind of automated payout flow.
